Mine-Bending Golf from Dan Hixson

Built on a sand-and-gravel mine alongside the South Umpqua River in Roseburg, Oregon, the newest golf course from Pacific Northwest native Dan Hixson opens nine holes for Preview Play this summer — joining his acclaimed designs at Wine Valley, Bandon Crossings and Silvies Valley Ranch. “The land very much dictates the design at Bar Run,” Hixson says. “It’s a reclamation project for the mining operation, and that gave me a lot of flexibility to design memorable, challenging golf with a surprising amount of width at the same time. When you have this landscape — with no homes, a mix of large ponds, beautiful trees, the riverside setting along holes 10, 11 and 8 — and ownership like the Guido family who want to build a fun experience both on and off the golf course, it really fires up your creativity.”

While 9.5 holes are currently open (the par-3 15th is currently playing to a temporary green), golfers can expect to get a feel for the entire course with a mix of holes from the front and back nines making up the current routing. Please keep in mind that Bar Run is an active mine, orchard and construction site with work continuing on the remaining golf holes and RV Resort, which may result in a more rustic, behind-the-scenes golf adventure than your everyday round. But it is our goal to make your visit as memorable as possible with fun Dan Hixson-designed golf and friendly customer service. The complete 18-hole golf course is expected to open in Summer 2022.

Bar Run does not currently have a driving range or practice facility. But we do offer beverage service (including a limited beer, wine and cider selection) and limited prepackaged snack items. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate vegan and gluten-free requests at this time. Bar Run is also currently using portable toilet facilities throughout the property.

We understand everyone has last-minute concerns that come up. We kindly ask that you Please Notify Us As Early As Possible if you need to change, reschedule or cancel your visit so we can open up your tee time to other guests.

Bar Run is located at the Umpqua Sand & Gravel mine at 640 Shady Drive, Roseburg, OR 97471. The best route is to head west off Interstate 5 using the NW Garden Valley Boulevard exit, take a left onto Melrose Road (4.9 miles), and then take a right onto Shady Drive (.9 miles). You’ll see signs pointing to the temporary golf parking and check-in tent once you’ve arrived on the mining property.

Thank you once again for choosing Bar Run. We look forward to having you out.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us at or (541) 492-0000.

What’s in a Name?

Once upon a time, this little pocket of the American West was covered entirely by the South Umpqua River, which now serves as the northern border of the golf course along the 8th, 10th and 11th holes. Back when Umpqua Sand & Gravel opened for business in the 1960s, our objective was to mine the leftover land’s “river bar” layer for round rock, sand and gravel.

And we’ve been digging ever since.

The “Bar Run” is our pay dirt. It gets excavated, washed and sifted into various materials used in construction, agriculture, landscaping and numerous other industries, including golf course development. Simply put, the “Bar Run” built this golf course, both literally and financially. That’s why we chose it as our namesake — a tip of the hard hat to our geological history and a business truly built from the ground up.

It’s the foundation for everything we do at Umpqua Sand & Gravel — and everything we’re building for the future. In fact, golfers will often get a glimpse into the daily mining operations still chugging away beyond the fairways and greens. And one of our iconic dragline buckets stands guard between the 14th fairway and 16th green.

Of course, if you want to interpret “Bar Run” as your own personal “run to the bar” after 9 or 18 or 36 (or more) holes … we’re cool with that, too. We’ll have a tasty beverage waiting for you.

Welcome to the Bar Run.
